My rating

I’m like this all the bloody time around you. I hate it. Do you know that? I have no control. I just want to fuck and fuck and fuck until nothing matters anymore.
… This is supposed to go away after I come. But it doesn’t. Not with you, wife. My passion is this insatiable perversion.

My, my, my… Kerrigan Byrne is a dirty bird! When a friend recommended and gifted me this book a few days ago, I was simply excited to get a solid HR recommendation. I haven’t read many but the few I’ve had the pleasure to get lost into were fantastic reads. And Kerrigan Byrne was no exception to that rule.
Not only she sucks you right in with a tale from the past and promises of second chance at love, but she tells a tantalizing love story between two lost souls. I absolutely loved her hero, so dark, so dangerous and all alpha but loved even more the feistful character of the heroine, Farah. Add to this the most erotically charged scenes I’ve had the pleasure to read in a WHILE and you’ve got a winner right here. SO GOOD.

Dorian Blackwell, the Blackheart of Ben More, is a ruthless villain. Scarred and hard-hearted, Dorian is one of Victorian London’s wealthiest, most influential men who will stop at nothing to wreak vengeance on those who’ve wronged him…and will fight to the death to seize what he wants. The lovely, still innocent widow Farah Leigh Mackenzie is no exception-and soon Dorian whisks the beautiful lass away to his sanctuary in the wild Highlands…

COURTING DESIRE
But Farah is no one’s puppet. She possesses a powerful secret-one that threatens her very life. When being held captive by Dorian proves to be the only way to keep Farah safe from those who would see her dead, Dorian makes Farah a scandalous proposition: marry him for protection in exchange for using her secret to help him exact revenge on his enemies. But what the Blackheart of Ben More never could have imagined is that Farah has terms of her own, igniting a tempestuous desire that consumes them both. Could it be that the woman he captured is the only one who can touch the black heart he’d long thought dead?

My Review

It is making a rather large and fallacious assumption that I have a heart to give… or a soul.

LOVED IT. Just loved it.
Great introduction chapter hooking me right up and making me literally a prisoner of its the pages.
Attaching characters, rekindled lovers, a feisty and smart heroine, a tortured hero threading the edges of assholeness and downright dangerous. ( And we love those heroes… Sigh.)
I enjoyed their banter very much, fueled by a hate to love trope, it was just utterly enjoyable to witness both their will not to like each other crumble to dust. The tension and lust between them, so thick you could touch it!

I’m like this all the bloody time around you. I hate it. Do you know that? I have no control. I just want to fuck and fuck and fuck until nothing matters anymore.
… This is supposed to go away after I come. But it doesn’t. Not with you, wife. My passion is this insatiable perversion.

Charming and lovable secondary characters made this HR my happy place for a few hours.
And oh, enough steam to make you wish for a cold shower… or a highwayman of your own.
I think I’ve died and went to heaven with the wedding night scene, it combined lust, tension, pant up desire, raw need, anger and fear… Oh my! (Yes I just said “oh my”)

She’d be wrong just now. So very wrong. Any control she’d imagined had been an illusion. Dorian Blackwell never allowed anyone else to wield it in his presence.

A special mention to the “column of arousal ” image, as I will refer to the manly appendage this way from now on. Sounds so much fancier and classy than a cock.
About that, my fear when reading HR is to be surrounded by one too many flowery analogies, or purple prose… Let me tell you here it wasn’t the case at all. I loved the writing. No flowers required !

All in all I just adored this book, fell in pure love and lust for the black hearted Dorian Blackwell and Kerrigan Byrne just became my newly bookish addiction! So much so that I’ve started  book 2 in this series, The Hunter,  right away and I can tell you already I’m loving it even MORE than The Highwayman…

“Any trace of boyish vulnerability had vanished. In its place stood a tower of dominant muscle and lust.”

Author's Bio

Kerrigan has done many things to pay the bills, from law enforcement to belly dance instructor. Now she’s finally able to have the career she’d decided upon at thirteen when she announced to her very skeptical family that she was going to “grow up to be a romance novelist.” Whether she’s writing about Celtic Druids, Victorian bad boys, or brash Irish FBI Agents, Kerrigan uses her borderline-obsessive passion for history, her extensive Celtic ancestry, and her love of Shakespeare in almost every story.

She’s the author of THE HIGHWAYMAN, THE HUNTER, THE HIGHLANDER, and THE DUKE, coming soon from St. Martin’s Press.

THE HUNTER, has been named the one of Amazon’s best books of the Month for 2016!

She lives at the base of the Rocky Mountains with her handsome husband and three lovely teenage girls, but dreams of settling on the Pacific Coast.
